Sittingbourne town centre regeneration update

Take a look at Phase 1 of the Sittingbourne town centre regeneration plan the Spirit of Sittingbourne. What's happening, where is it happening and when does it all take place?

Phase 1 of the Spirit of Sittingbourne development is due to start in October this year (2015) and should complete during 2017.

The development will take place on

  • Land currently used as car parks in Cockleshell Walk and Spring Street
  • The site of some commercial building space in Fountain Street
  • Part of the Forum car park
  • The St Michaels Road roundabout and some road area in front of the station
  • Part of the current access road to the Forum
  • The land to the north of the railway station currently used as the Princes Street depot

There will be significant changes to the roads in front of the railway station and it is suggested there will be a return to two way traffic in place of the one way system.

New Housing
215 high quality apartments will be constructed across three town centre sites

  • Cockleshell Walk - 62 apartments (currently a car park)
  • Spring Street - 88 apartments (currently a car park)
  • Fountain Street - 65 apartments (currently commercial units)

Multi-screen cinema, restaurants and public space
Located between the rear of Wilko and the railway station on land currently used for part of the Forum car park, St Michaels road roundabout and part of that road.

Comprising two buildings containing a new 7-screen multiplex cinema with seven new restaurants which are expected to attract up to 400,000 visitors per year creating a night time economy that Sittingbourne currently lacks.

Adjacent to these two buildings there will be a new public square providing flexible open space for cultural activities and forming part of a pleasing welcome to Sittingbourne in front of the railway station and a natural route to and from the town centre.

Multi-storey Car Park
To be built on the access road to the Forum adjacent to St Michaels road.

A new 308-space multi-storey car park will provide central parking close to Sittingbourne’s new amenities and public spaces.

New Retail Park
Located north of the railway station on the land between the station and Eurolink Way on land currently used by the Princes Street depot.

A big box retail park with 4 large format retail units, will produce more shopping opportunities for the people of Sittingbourne.
